There was rain forecast for about 8 am, so I tried to get a run in early in the morning. I got rained on anyway, but the thick summer foliage of many trees on my route preventing me from getting totally soaked. Then we had a little breakfast and worked on our computers and I fixed us one of Mark’s favorite for lunch: pasta with meat sauce and a salad with my special vinaigrette–the first meal I’ve cooked since we got here! Imke loved it too. After lunch, we took advantage of a bit of blue sky to walk downtown, but the forecast for a 2 pm downpour was unfortunately accurate. We spent much more time in a 1-Euro store in the Johannisstrasse near the main pedestrian mall than we intended. We watched them sell at least a dozen cheap umbrellas as we milled around looking for a collapsible silicon ice cube tray (no such luck) and a bath mat for my mom’s tub (sort of successful). As it lightened up, we walked down the pedestrian mall to our favorite gelateria (of course) but then also spent another half hour in a little cafe with hot coffee and hot tea, which were more appropriate than ice cream for a chilly day in the 50s.

Banana split and “gnocchi” plate (just vanilla ice cream, but I love the nut sauce they pour over it)

We came home around 4:30 pm, and I rested for a bit, because I had an achy old-person hip for most of the day. That helped, and my mom and I took a short walk around the neighborhood before we set the table for a bread-and-cheese dinner (Abendbrot), with some more salad. Simple and yummy. The original plan had been for me to write ONE complicated email after dinner and then spend some time looking over some photo albums with my mom (a third band of thunderstorms was moving through, so definitely no more outdoor time today!). But after the hour it took for me to do that, a former teacher from my old high school whom I had been trying to reach via third parties called around 8:30 pm, and we talked for nearly an hour (more about that tomorrow). So we postponed the photo album session to Thursday, and still didn’t manage to get to bed until 10:30. All in all a restful day, though.

Today was definitely a rest day after the weeklong tour of central Germany.
