We left the house early-ish (8:15?) and sat at the corner bakery with our coffee and tea until our bus came and took us to the train station for our “running away from the kids” adventure of a weekend in Hamburg with Andrea and Peter. We had a very pleasant train ride and subway ride to Wandsbek Markt, where they picked us up. We had lunch at their apartment and then took off for a lovely afternoon of exploring the harbor, specifically the former warehouse section (Speicherstadt) where ritzy apartments for 40,000 people have been stomped out of the ground in the past 15 years. I only remembered the old part of the Speicherstadt (still gorgeous) but this was quite surprising.

We took a Ferris Wheel ride and got to see it all from above as well.

We had coffee in a cafe right outside the Speicherstadt and then took a bus to the downtown shopping district. The weather was gorgeous all day and so we decided to walk around the Innenalster, looking out at the sailboats on the Aussenalster and just having a wonderful time.

Then we went back home, had Abendbrot at Andrea’s and watched Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris on their big projection screen to wrap up the day. I slept like a baby after all the walking and a nice hot shower, so that was wonderful, too.
